iray studio scene
I’m sharing a super simple 3ds Max / iray studio scene. Read on for more info and downloads. This setup shows how you can get pretty good results from a very basic (and fast) setup in iray. For this particular scene all I basically did was:
- create a custom HDR using HDRLightStudio.
- Assign that HDR as my scene environment.
- Add a skylight to the scene and disable it to quickly kill the default 3ds Max lights.
- Set iray as my production renderer.
- Set iray to unlimited render time & hit the render button (stop it when it’s noise free).
Of course I had to assign materials to the scene as we always have to do but as far as the actual scene configuration goes, this one is very simplistic! These GPU based applications really excel in scenarios like this.
Now, for the scene itself. I had to make some changes for the public version of the scene. I had to change the ground texture maps from some purchased texture maps to a map that ships with 3ds Max. I also had to substitute the vehicle for some stand-in geometry. Sorry, but on the upside you can download the viper model yourself HERE, or just add your own vehicle/object.
NOTE: You may also want to use this iray Manager script as I did to set the background to black, or whatever color you want.

Thanks for sharing Jeff.
Nice to see some iray stuff.
Warm regards!

Thanks Jeff.
Looks great Jeff, just 1 question, these files that you got from the cgizone website, they are in maya format, what is the best way to bring those into max? I don’t use Maya, but this model looks really great, might have to install it just so I can export it somehow into max.
keep up the good work!
Javier – I would download the demo of Maya for the conversion. The process is pretty straight forward, and similar to 3ds Max actually. A small tip to save you some headaches: The FBX plugin may be disabled by default.
If you get into Maya and find you can’t import or export FBX files, check this Maya option:
Window>Settings/Preferences/Plugin Manager. In the Plugin Manager you’ll enable the FBXmaya.mll option and may need to restart Maya.
thanks jeff.
can you tell me why i always get this massage:
“IRAY 0.11 warn : CUDA device 0: no host mapped memory, first frames will be slow”
i have installed cuda driver, sdk, etc. how can i check my cuda and my iray render is working well?
my device:
processor: intel core i7 930@2.80GHZ 2.79GHz
Memory: 6 GB
VGA: Quardo 3800M
Window 7 64bit
Not sure. Perhaps the scenes you’re testing are too large/complex for the card? Have you tried a basic scene with a low poly teapot on a plane with default A&D materials applied with the mr physical sky for lighting? Does something like that render?
Have you tried the iray manager script to force iray to use only the GPU? Does that render the basic scene described above?
Specs for the 3800M show it has 128 CUDA cores so it should work with iray. Just make sure your scene fits within the 1024mb of on-board memory for that card.
- I think my scene isn’t complex, i used ur scene iray_test.max, and It’s also same thing happen when i just render a teapot.
- i had tried the iray manager script.
I sending u an email to your facebook with picture(my screen shoot) cause i don’t know how to attach a picture in this comment tab.
tanks for ur help.
Hi Jeff this is a 3dsmax 2011 file? I am a vray + 3dsmax 2009 user, I wanna to check the hdr file mostly….
thanks for the sharing……the render looks amazing…
Yes, iRay was released as part of the 2011 Subscription benefit so the file itself is 2011/iRay compatible. Of course the included .HDR used in the scene can be extracted from the archive and used in other applications.

Hi jeff very nice render….Thanks man, i have a hard time with creating a silver car paint
in your scene, im using a composite map with a&d mat.
I just cant get the right look.. becouse the environment is to dark (i think)
Im tryin to make similar car paint like you did on the hdr light map website.
Can you maybe give a short explaination how you done it..
UR THE BEST… : P
The composite map isn’t compatible with iRay, so that’s probably why it’s not working as you’d expect. There’s a list of iRay compatible materials & maps in the iRay documentation: Help>Additional Help>Advantage Pack Help
Due to the lack of compatible material blending options in iRay you’d have to render out metallic based paints in layers and put them together in post.
Hey Jeff, again outstanding your work mate!
One question Jeff,
can you explain your trick with the frontlights?
What exactly do you do that they just look so real??
They are just awesome!
cheers
mate
Jack Dyson
There’s actually not much to the lights. It’s just some self-illuminated basic geometry inside the highly reflective headlight assembly and then a glass material applied to the headlight lens/cover.
Like this tutorial: http://www.dmmultimedia.com/3dtips_04b.htm
Thanx for the info….
Im trying it also with Mental ray.. !
But it just wont work for me, two years ago i started to model my own car in 3ds max, it took me about 6 month’s to finish it,
At the time i used vray to render it, but i gave it up becouse i discoverd your renders and i found it very hard to see the difrence between a real car picture and your render,s.
So i started to learn MENTAL RAY, i learnd very much though.
But not enough to mimic my own car’s Car Paint..
So jeff, if you ever decide to make a tutorial.
Please let me know
Thanx again .
Ps, im from bosnia, so my english is not so good…
Oh, I’ve put a few of my mental ray paints over at mrmaterials.com. They may make for a good starting point, here’s the links:
Pearl White (metallic): http://mrmaterials.com/resource-central.html?func=fileinfo&id=1015
Orange (metallic): http://mrmaterials.com/resource-central.html?func=fileinfo&id=185
Then you may also find this thread useful (lot’s of info throughout): http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=6&t=834464&page=1&pp=15
Thank you very much….:)
Hi Jeff, great car renders, just makesnyou wonder why people even bother forking out for another render engine when mentalray/iray can produse images like that. Id like to say thanks for all your great tips, tutorials and materials.
Guys like you and master zap have really helped me in regards to understanding mentalray. This is not related, but
I was wondering if you have ever used either the muhair or puppet hair shaders. Or maybe know of another one.
Ive been following the threads in my mentalray ang cgtalk but they are all fairly old.
Ive installed the muhair shader but have no clue as to how to use it and all the links to download the puppet hairshader lead to nowhere.
Id really appreciate any advice you could give as mental ray hair shaders are real hard to find.
Im using max 2011 x64
Hi Jeff, I’ve tried to download the model from the Chrysler website, but every time I try I get this error
“CDO.Message.1 error ’80040213′
The transport failed to connect to the server.
/CGIChrysler/StudentToolkit.asp, line 127″
Would it be possible for you to email me the Viper model?
Thanks.
HEEEY……………. : )
WOW…..Nice camaro, sooo realistic, very nice car paint.
Did you renderd them both with iray?
Regards ..
Hi,
Yes, the camaro models in my portfolio were rendered with iRay.
Wel like your work, thanks for sharing your knowledge..
h? jeff if you dont mind,? want to ask something.? use 3ds max and hair&fur can not see on the viewport realtime as you know.? search realtime plugin and ?ts work on just maya.? decide to use iray if the hair&fur work on.can you help me about this problem
The hair/fur modifier isn’t very iray friendly. The hair/fur would need to be used in geometry mode so that’s going to eat up a lot of GPU memory.
It’s also not a functioning as a real-time viewport rendering app at the moment either. Hopefully one day we (3ds Max users) will have that.
Very nice work mate, I’m assuming I can’t open this with Max 2009? I tried!
Correct, iray was provided as an update to 2011 and included in 2012 so you’d need one of those versions. You can of course still extract the .HDR file from the archive and use it in older versions though.
Hi Jeff, great site and awesome works too. I have one question related to HDR Light Studio. Do you recommend another program? Because that one is very expensive.
Thanks,
Cyrus
Provided you already have access to 3ds Max you can make your own HDRs in it. Setup some lights and/or self-illuminated objects and render them out using something like the wraparound lens shader to help render in a panoramic output. Just make sure to work in a linear format (gamma 1.0).
Might also be able to create them in Photoshop, I don’t think I’ve tried creating non-photographic based HDRs that way yet though. Both methods won’t offer the flexibility of HDR Light Studio but should still allow a person to create some studio type HDRs.
Thanks Jeff for the reply.
Actually I’m using Maya and not 3ds. I agree with you that nothing can replace the flexibility of HDR Light Studio. I have some HDR’s already created, but isn’t the same thing. That’s why I asked you if you know another program that do this stuff.
Thanks Jeff
Thanks a lot jeff..
for your tips & tricks .I really like your tutorials that have awesome guidance for me.
Hats off jeff.
Great resource man. by looking through the setup this has taught me a lot. cheers
