Yay! I can now discuss how I’ve been creating some of my layered materials with iray! It’s a new layered material that has now been publicly released. It has a LOT of great features (SSS/Back scattering/Translucency, coatings, dispersion, etc.) all wrapped into one convenient source. You can download this new material from the nvidia ARC website HERE.
Update: If you’re unable to download the package from the nvidia ARC website I put a copy of the package on my server HERE. The PDF document included in the content said redistribution was alright as long as it was “done so in it’s entirety and without modifications”.
Examples:
NOTE: And before someone asks, no it’s not compatible with mental ray at this time.

Can you post a direct link for the plugin please, I can’t download from the nvidia forum.
thanks Jeff.
Dom.
Updated the post with a link to the file for those having download/permission problems from the nvidia ARC forum.
This is the most exciting news I’ve heard in a while. Hallelujah!
looks great. Been waiting for the SSS stuff.
Do you know if this new material works with 3ds max 2012?
Cheers,
Steve
Looks like it’s 3ds max 2013 only at this point.
Excellent, Thank You Jeff
! I was unable to download the zip file due to permissions (posted and left a message on the nvidia ARC website). Thanks again! All my best!
No problem, glad to help.
Thanks Jeff! This looks great! Does SSS also capable of human skin shading?
I don’t think it would be as efficient with human skin as something like the mental ray skin material is. However, I haven’t personally tried to recreate human skin with this new iray material so I could be completely wrong.
Great news. Thanks Jeff!
Thank you so much, Jeff !
How’s it going Jeff. Great stuff. I’m excited to see this stuff develop. Keep up the work.
Do you know if they ever plan on expanding it to render out passes?
I haven’t heard anything about making it compatible with render passes. Of course that doesn’t mean it’s not on the horizon, just that I personally don’t know if it is or isn’t on the “to do” list.
Pitty no max 2011 it seems.. will there be in the future?
That would first fall on the shoulders of Autodesk because they would need to update iray in 3ds max 2011 to the latest version. With that in mind I’d say it’s unlikely to happen for 2011 but that’s just a guess on my part.
Thx for replying Jeff
.
Max12 and Max13 for CAT Animation is a real headache! thats why we are still using max11…
Hi Jeff!
Thank you for the post!
I have two questions:
Where did you buy the lamp?
Do you know how i could save my preset in the dropdown menu (as you pointed years ago for arch &design)?
Thanks
“Where did you buy the lamp?” – You can find the chandelier model HERE.
“Do you know how i could save my preset in the dropdown menu (as you pointed years ago for arch &design)?” – The prestets are embedded within one of the two DLL files that comes with the package (I don’t know which). Therefore I don’t know of any way to create/save your own presets directly within the drop-down preset list. Of course saving your own material mixes to a .mat file still works. I know that’s not the same thing you asked but I thought I better mention that so others that may stumble across this post down the road will know there are options for saving materials.
Hi Jeff!
Thank you ?
Hey Jeff,
Would you know of any reason why iray would render an object blurry, but once I put a ground plane underneath it, it renders clear? Odd
Jeff, thanks for this. I had been thinking for a while that iray needs it’s own specific material. After spending one evening with it, I think it is amazing. Having the presets in there has really made it quick and easy to learn how to use it. I’m annoyed that I have to go to work to day, I could quite happily spend hours and hours with this!
hi jeff
1st of all big thanks and a huge compliment for all this great tutorials and demo scenes! keep this fantastic work going on!!!!!
I´m just starting with 3ds max and rendering (for products), and just read your blog post about iray material (until now I tried some samples with iray renderer for production and mental ray renderer for material; now I think I must use iray renderer for both – material + production?).
Do you have a tip what´s best concerning lights when I only render single products (for example screws and tools) – which lighting setup would be best for that kind of iray rendering (iray renderer for production and material)
thx for answering
best regards
john
“(until now I tried some samples with iray renderer for production and mental ray renderer for material; now I think I must use iray renderer for both – material + production?)” – You are exactly correct. Since this new layered material isn’t compatible with mental ray it will just show up as black in the material editor if you assign mental ray to the material editor. You can still ‘blindly’ edit the iray layered material settings if mental ray is assigned to the material editor. However, in order to see the changes happen to the shader ball in the material editor, iray must be assigned to the material editor.
All that being said, working with the iray layered material in the MEDIT becomes HORRIBLY slow when iray is assigned to the material editor. In my tests this is especially true when you start assigning bitmaps to the iray layered material. Somewhat of a work around would be to leave mental ray assigned to the material editor and use iray in active shade mode to make adjustments to the material in your scene. I also have a neutral material creation scene that I created, similar to the one I built for mrmaterials.com. Sometimes I’ll use it to create various materials then save them to one of my custom .mat files for use later on in real scenes.
“Do you have a tip what´s best concerning lights when I only render single products (for example screws and tools) – which lighting setup would be best for that kind of iray rendering (iray renderer for production and material)” – I would recommend using HDRIs because it’s easy to place highlights/lighting/reflections exactly where you need them (using irregular shapes, which photometric lights can’t do) to properly highlight specific details of an object. I like using HDRLightStudio for this task. However, you can also use self-illuminated shapes in 3dsmax, photometric light sources, or build HDRs in 3dsmax/Photoshop/etc..if HDRLS is out of the scope.
hi jeff,
thx a lot for your answer and explanations!
best regards
hi jeff,
once again, just saw the first picture in your post with the 3 different creatures, just have to say they look awesome realistic!! is this all made with iray materials and iray renderer? If so, I´ve a big big request, are you willing to share this one so I can learn with trying to replicate it, the light settings and the materials?? my mail is in the post, thankful for every tip on iray rendering, thx a lot in advance!!
best regards john
… concerning my last post, I forgot to tell that I´m most interested in the first 2 metallic looking ones… thx a lot
Actually you already have the base of those three materials. The red paint is the “Car paint – cranberry” preset with small flakes. The silver version is the “Metal – magnesium alloy” preset with the metallic flakes also adjusted to a smaller size (0.008) and density/strength reduced to 1.0 from 2.0.
For the lighting, I used one of the HDRs I posted HERE. It’s the one with the ground light (JP_ColumbiaSC_10).
From there it’s all post adjustments. In whatever application you prefer you’ll want to make some tweaks like color and contrast adjustments to make it more vibrant/punchy as I did in those examples.
hi jeff,
thx for your great answer -> post #28! do you used one of your studio scenes http://jeffpatton.net/2012/07/iray-studio-scene-2/ or just a hdr as environement? thank you!
Hi do you know its also possible to use with Maya ??
thanks
I do not know whether or not it can be used with Maya.
when you make tutorials for i-ray, was in their mental-ray were the best.
We look forward to the tutorials i-ray
these look good, much like the sharer that come with XSI
good shader like he one in xsi
wheresa iy the iray toolkit? is it C++?
I’m not exactly sure, but you may want to ask over at the nvidia ARC website. Hopefully they may be able to direct you to it.
This is a great material. I’ve made some pretty good looking skin with it, and nice glass and wax. However, despite a couple hours tweaking, I have not been able to duplicate that gorgeous wax you made on the alien render. That looks fantastic!
Thanks for your patience in answering our . . . Can you put iray rendering tutarial ( Exterior & Interior ) for architectural Visualization ?
Hi Jeff, thanks for the awesome post!
Do you think there is there any chance that the Falloff material will be supported?
I’d say maybe (geeez, I sound like a magic 8 ball). Probably have better chances for specific enhancements if we start adding them to the user voice site. I don’t see a specific iray section there (yet), but here’s a link to the general ‘rendering’ category. I guess that’s a good place to start with the iray requests for now.
Hi Jeff,
what sort of render times are getting using the SSS (for the alien/predator for example).
And are you finding any issues with caustic fireflies type things when using glass with dispersion?
Cheers,
Steve
I don’t remember the render time on the alien/predator bust but it wasn’t long enough. It had/has quite a bit of noise still in it. It does seem to take a while to clear grain when using the SSS option, but I imagine that’s to be expected in these type rendering applications. I didn’t notice any firefly issues with the dispersion test I ran, but it wasn’t in an enclosed room or anything so that may be why I didn’t encounter that issue.
cool, cheers.
I guess the render times will come down again with the new K20′s – out in December.
$3,199 MSRP, USD though.
cheers.
I dont know How to install this plugin, can you help me, thank you.
Sure, there should be a PDF document included in the package that contains installation instructions for this shader. Did you encounter a problem with one of those steps?
Thank you, it is my fault. I have not Adobe Reader to read beforce. are you work in NVIDIA mental ray company ?
“are you work in NVIDIA mental ray company?” – No, I am not an employee of, affiliated with, or a spokesman for NVIDIA (or what was mental images) or Autodesk for that matter.
Hey, man, I saw you in twitter, and I followed you ,hahaha
It might be off the topic, but is it possible to use render passes with iRay? I like that option very much on mental ray.
At this time iray does not recognize the 3dsmax render elements.
Jeff,
I finally sat down and worked the bugs out of my Iray scene. The model is not mine and was a request. I noticed the interior a few minutes ago. I guess I used a glossy map some how but at 2 am your eyes just aren’t right…lol Thank you as always bro I appreciate your time. Here is a 2013 Boss with an orange I mixed.

Hey Terry. It’s coming along nicely! I’d probably decrease the flake scale a bit as the paint looks closer to a gelcoat bassboat finish at the moment…which is cool in it’s own right.
Hey Jeff, I want ask you for some help , about iray Rendering,my pc cant rendering, computer(NVIDIA GTX460) is not good, I want send something to you and rendering with your Power PC, waiting for your reply ,thank you thank you. PS: not good at english
Jeff, what base do you add / can you add the iray layered material too? Also, I am assuming most of the stardard maps do not work with iray, like a graident transarency falloff, blend materials? Thanks.
“what base do you add / can you add the iray layered material too?” – The layered material is basically a self-contained material. Since there aren’t any easy methods of blending/mixing various material with iray in 3ds max, there really isn’t anything to add/blend it with. At the moment it’s still a giant pain in the butt to try and mix different whole materials with iray.
“I am assuming most of the stardard maps do not work with iray, like a graident transarency falloff, blend materials?” – I think the gradient ramp works with it now, but I may be thinking of something else. The others you mentioned like falloff/blend I know do not. There’s a complete list of supported materials, maps, and lights in the 3ds max / iray documentation. It should be updated with each new release as they add more features and/or compatibility with existing maps, etc..
Hi Jeff
Surprisingly i dont have nvidia folder in my max root directory..i’m using max design 2012..did i forget to install something??
The iray material is 2013 and higher only at this time. I doubt there will be a 2012 version unless Autodesk decides to update 2012 with a newer version of iray (doubtful).
