Server Update
Due to the traffic and amount of graphical content on the site here I have outgrown the shared hosting package I’ve been using. I have put in a request for an upgrade to the next server level which is a VPS. That should kick in sometime in the next couple of days. I believe this upgrade will prevent the site from going down from heavy traffic spikes, which is what happened yesterday.
Hopefully this update will be performed without much downtime. However, I wanted to mention what’s going on in case the site has a few hiccups in the following days.

Thanks Jeff I really appreciate you posting all the time
Heh, we had this problem too
Can you share what VPS (parameters) you will get and the amount of traffic which was causing the troubles?
The site averages around 600 visits per day and on Monday it spiked to around 1300. Bandwidth usage (average) runs a little less than 60gb per month. They said with the moderate traffic plus the number of CPU cycles the site was using it made the shared server unstable. Those numbers really don’t seem high enough to me to cause problems…but I guess it depends on how many other sites were using the same shared server, etc..
One of the big issues is/was the sharing of images across multiple sites. For example, I still host all the images used in my older tutorials at mrmaterials.com and my cgsociety portfolio blog. So those sites (far more traffic than mine) pull images from a folder on my server in addition to whatever my site is using. Offloading those images would probably help reduce the CPU cycles they were referring to.
The VPS specs are HERE. I went with the minimum VPS-1000 option.
Hi Jeff, thank you for sharing this. Yeah, the traffic you mentioned doesn’t seem to cause the problems but the shared stuff probably yes.
Again, thx
Hi, I looked yesterday at iray active shade and when I start rendering it renders once and that is it, it doesn’t update every time I rotate or do any changes to the scene. Is this supposed to be like this? I thought it will be rather like with V-Ray RT where it re-renders every time you do something.
“it doesn’t update every time I rotate or do any changes to the scene” – If it’s not updating when you rotate around the scene then it’s because you’re not using a camera view. As for the other changes not updating, there’s a complete list of what iray activeshade will/won’t do in the documentation HERE.
Thanks Jeff, the camera view was the problem.
